Narrative
WASHINGTON, DC – The Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating a fatal car crash that occurred on Sunday, June 4th along I-395 in Southwest D.C.
At about 7:45 p.m., a Hyundai Elantra was headed south in the Ninth Street tunnel when the vehicle’s driver veered onto the westbound ramp, striking the jersey wall twice. The impact led to the Hyundai crashing through the barrier and plummeting onto the southbound I-395 below.
The Hyundai landed on the rear of a Lexus, subsequently flipping and skidding while upside down until coming to a halt. The driver of the Hyundai was ejected from the vehicle during the collision. Meanwhile, the Lexus also flipped, ultimately colliding with a third vehicle that was traveling south on I-395.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene, discovering the ejected Hyundai driver unresponsive and displaying no signs of life. He was later identified as Van Thomas Lee, a 28-year-old resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
A passenger from the Hyundai and the Lexus driver sustained injuries deemed non-life-threatening and were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
