Narrative
ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has revoked the police powers of Officer Peter McCauley after he was arrested by Virginia State Police (VSP) on Thanksgiving. According to MPD, VSP apprehended McCauley in connection with a crash that resulted in at least one person being injured.
The incident unfolded just before midnight on Wednesday when a state trooper observed McCauley, driving a Tesla, speeding at 95 mph in a 55 mph zone on Interstate 395 near the Arlington/Alexandria line. McCauley, refusing to stop, initiated a chase after the trooper activated emergency equipment.
Exiting the Interstate at Seminary Rd. in Alexandria, McCauley ran a red light, attempting a left turn and colliding with a Honda Civic. The impact caused McCauley’s Tesla to hit the Jersey wall and a light pole.
Both McCauley and his 28-year-old passenger were hospitalized, with McCauley evaluated for injuries and the passenger treated for minor injuries. The 22-year-old driver of the Honda, from Suffolk, Va., also suffered minor injuries.
MPD clarified that McCauley, driving a personally-owned vehicle, was off duty during the incident. He faces a felony charge of eluding police, and VSP continues to investigate the matter.
